UACP presents the 2009 US-ASEAN Short Film Competition

Theme: Southeast Asian Life, Culture, and People

Washington, DC, April 20, 2009 – US-ASEAN Creative Project (UACP) is proud to present the 2009 US-ASEAN Short Film Competition – the first of its kind to focus on the vibrant and dynamic region of Southeast Asia. We are calling for entry from everyone in the world, not limited to ASEAN-based filmmakers, to submit their short film. In keeping with the organization’s mission, there is one mandatory thematic requirement: Southeast Asian life, culture, and people. We challenge filmmakers to be as creative as they want in interpreting the theme.

The competition will make use of the advent of digital distribution in filmmaking through YouTube. Contestants are expected to upload their films to YouTube and submit the URLs. Five finalists will be shortlisted and their work will be shown on the 2009 US-ASEAN Film Festival and the UACP Portal. The judges will then make their decision for the best film while the audience (online and at the festival) will vote for the Audience Award.

We have put together an international group of experts from the various aspects of the film industry. Our judges are based in various places in the United States and Southeast Asia. They are: Bangkok-based film critic and researcher Anchalee Chaiworaporn; New York-based Singaporean filmmaker Colin Goh; film professor Konrad Ng from Mānoa, Hawaii; and Tom Vick, film programmer for the Freer & Sackler Galleries at the Smithsonian Institution here in Washington, DC.
