World's First Asean Film Festival to showcase talent
Rosli Abidin Yahya - Brunei Direct, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam
Aspiring local filmmakers and photographers will have an opportunity to showcase their talent in the United States by participating in the first ever Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Film, Video & Photography Festival. Participants stand a chance to win a cash prize of US$1,750 (B$3,150).
The festival - scheduled to be held on June 14 - is open to independent and amateur filmmakers or photographers from all nationalities, provided that their works are 'Asean' related.
Entries should be submitted by April 27, and if selected, their works would be screened at the Grand Ballroom of the J.W. Marriott hotel, Washington D.C.
The competition is organised by the Global Renaissance of Asean-American Culture and Entertainment (GRACE) heritage, a foundation established by two Indonesians residing in the US.
"We want to promote the image of Asean member countries - as Southeast Asia is one of the world's most culturally rich regions," Karina Sudyatmiko, a freelance photographer who co-founded the heritage said.
"One way of promoting Asean culture is through the creative lens of young and talented individuals," she added.
The event also aims to provide a venue for amateur film and photography students of Southeast Asian descent to showcase their talent.
"We know how important it is for young filmmakers and photographers to gain exposure. This event is also aimed at encouraging people to explore Southeast Asian cultures and heritage," Sudyatmiko explained.
No specific criteria is being imposed for film where an entry can be a narrative, documentary, short or feature as long as it concerns Asean.
American filmmakers and experts on Asian cultures will act as juries for the competitions.
To compliment the event, there would also be live performances showcasing Southeast Asian cultures through live-band and dance performances.
